Why this recipe works

The Adventure-Q proves you don’t need an oven to cook a perfectly roasted piece of beef. Searing the roast first locks in flavour, while the kettle lid creates an even cooking environment that delivers a beautifully pink centre and crisp, golden potatoes, all in the one pan.

Hayley’s notes

We wanted to see whether the Adventure-Q could produce a beautifully pink roast beef without needing an oven, and it absolutely delivered. The combination of searing and roasting under the kettle lid produced tender, juicy beef with perfectly roasted potatoes.

Using a meat thermometer takes the guesswork out of cooking and makes it easy to achieve your preferred level of doneness.

Time

Preparation: 15 minutes
Cook time: Approximately 50 minutes
Total time: Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes (including resting)

Ingredients

  • 1.2–1.5kg boneless beef roasting cut, such as topside or rump
  • 600–750g potatoes, cut into approximately 3cm pieces
  • 1–2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

To serve

  • Steamed greens (optional)

Taste test notes

The beef develops a rich, caramelised crust while remaining beautifully tender and juicy with a perfectly pink centre. The potatoes become golden and crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, making this a classic roast dinner that’s surprisingly easy to cook in the Adventure-Q.

Method

  1. Remove the beef from the refrigerator 20 to 30 minutes before cooking. Pat it dry with paper towel and season generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  2. Cut the potatoes into evenly sized pieces so they cook at the same rate.
  3. Heat the Daymo Adventure-Q over medium-high heat with approximately 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  4. Add the beef and sear on every side until well browned. Use tongs to hold the roast upright as needed so every side develops a golden crust.
  5. Reduce the heat to low to medium. Arrange the potatoes around the outside edge of the Adventure-Q rather than directly underneath the beef. Drizzle with a little more olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Place the kettle lid on and roast for approximately 50 minutes, turning the beef several times during cooking. Stir and turn the potatoes regularly to ensure they cook evenly without catching on the base.
  7. Begin checking the beef after around 40 minutes using a meat thermometer. For medium-rare, remove the beef when it reaches an internal temperature of approximately 60–65°C, remembering it will continue cooking while resting.
  8. Transfer the beef to a board, cover loosely with foil and rest for 10 to 15 minutes. Continue cooking the potatoes for a few extra minutes if needed.
  9. Slice the beef and serve with the roasted potatoes and steamed greens.

Enjoy!

Anything the chef would change for next time?

Keep the potatoes around the outside edge of the pan rather than directly underneath the beef, and turn them regularly to prevent them from catching on the base.
