Why this recipe works
The Adventure-Q makes this classic beef chow mein incredibly easy by cooking everything in the one pan. The noodles absorb the rich, savoury sauce while the mince and vegetables create a hearty, flavour-packed meal that’s perfect for feeding the family or preparing ahead for leftovers.
Ross’s notes
This recipe has been adapted specifically for the Daymo Adventure-Q and comfortably feeds two people, with enough left over for another meal.
If you’re preparing meals for camping, this recipe also works brilliantly as a “dump bag” meal, making dinner even quicker to cook once you arrive.
Time
Preparation: 5 minutes
Cook time: 12–15 minutes
Total time: 20–30 minutes
Ingredients
- 500g lean beef mince
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon ginger paste (optional)
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 3 cups coleslaw mix (cabbage and carrot)
- 200g dried egg noodles (or 2 packets instant noodles with the seasoning discarded)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 teaspoon chicken stock powder
- 1 teaspoon curry powder
- 1 packet chow mein seasoning or chicken noodle soup mix
- 500ml water
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional)
- 2 spring onions, sliced
Taste test notes
This hearty chow mein is packed with savoury flavour, tender beef mince and perfectly cooked noodles. The coleslaw mix adds freshness and texture, while the simple sauce creates a comforting takeaway-style meal that’s ready in under 30 minutes.
Method
- Heat the Daymo Adventure-Q over medium-high heat and add the cooking oil.
- Add the onion and cook for a few minutes until softened.
- Add the beef mince and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the garlic, ginger and mushrooms (if using). Cook for a further 2 to 3 minutes.
- Add the soy sauce, oyster sauce, chicken stock powder, curry powder and water. Stir well to combine.
- Add the dried noodles, pressing them gently into the liquid.
- Stir through the chow mein seasoning (or chicken noodle soup mix).
- Simmer for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the noodles begin to soften.
- Add the coleslaw mix and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the noodles are fully cooked.
- Stir through the sesame oil and sliced spring onions.
- Taste and add a little extra soy sauce if desired before serving.
Enjoy!
Anything the chef would change for next time?
For an easy camping option, prepare a dump bag ahead of time:
Bag 1:
- Beef mince
- Onion
- Mushrooms
- Garlic
- Ginger
Sauce container:
- Soy sauce
- Oyster sauce
- Chicken stock powder
At camp, simply brown the contents of Bag 1, add the sauce mixture, water and noodles, then finish with the coleslaw mix.
For a more authentic takeaway-style chow mein, add 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce and ½ teaspoon Chinese five-spice along with the soy and oyster sauce. This adds extra depth of flavour without making the recipe any more complicated.
